There are three main types of thatch water reed, combed wheat reed and long straw.
The Life expectancy can vary considerably. Many factors can be taken into account regarding the life of any roof. The single biggest factor is the pitch of the roof, the steeper the pitch the faster the rain water is dispersed, the shallower the pitch the longer it takes for the water to run of the roof allowing it to penetrate deeper into the thatch before draining, hence shortening the life expectancy.
Other factors include the quality of material, the skills of the Thatcher and the location of the property. As a rough guide a water reed roof would last around 40 to 50 years, a combed wheat reed roof would last around 25 years and a long straw roof around 15 – 20 years.
All forms of thatch roofing need maintenance, usually a replacement ridge and a redress around every 10 – 12 years.
Water Reed gives a flat finish with sharp well defined edges, whilst Combed Wheat Reed gives a much softer line with a more rounded almost T cosy finish, And long straw a shaggy apperance. For all estimates & Quotations call us now on 07768 975 807 or email chrisgaussen@yahoo.co.uk
